The Movement & Learning Center on Biltmore Avenue will open its doors for 2 days packed full of workshops in topics from Introductory Burlesque to Boylesque, Stagecraft to Acrobalance, Professional Make-up for Stage and more. Hours in the ABSfest Seminary count towards your certificate of Vaudeville Divinity!

Burlesque 101 with the Ladies of Salome Cabaret


Amplify your Assets with Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey

This workshop will lead you to discover, sharpen and magnify your unique physicality and personality in order to bring it to the stage. Whether you are a burlesque dabbler, or a professional, we'll help you pull out an EVEN bigger, bolder stage persona. Through a combination of movement lessons, improv exercises, writing, performance games and critiques you will learn to embody our first rule inside and out: MAKE IT BIGGER. Bring sexy costume pieces to use in class- ie: boa, gloves, gown, heels, bra and undies. Can be worn over dance clothes for warmth/comfort.


Dedicated Flexibility for Movement Artists with contortionist Alyssum

Improving flexibility for performance and everyday health—Yoga is great, but what about when you don’t have time to go to a yoga class? This class will be open to ALL levels of flexibility, and will concentrate on things you can take home with you. We will specifically cover hamstring stretches (for all you high-heeled divas) and back stretches to keep that back of yours safe for a long time to come. There will also be discussion on how to improve flexibility over time (ever wanted to get into those splits?). Students will want to bring a yoga mat or towel, and note-taking materials are encouraged.


Circus-style Service with Rigel 7 of Shitz & Gigglz

Food service with extreme style makes for dynamic and fiscally rewarding presentation, both on stage and at work. Cheezy Gigglz McGillicuddy, aka Rigel 7, has been employing his armament of circus-style service tricks to dazzle crowds for years.


Vintage hair for the Modern Woman

Talloolah Love has been doing the up-do’s with vintage flair and emphasis on glamour for the past five years. She can show you the secret formula for polishing your look on stage with the perfect coif. Talloolah Love has made her name within stylist circles from her experience with weddings, Hair fashion shows with Aveda, and photo shoots done all over Atlanta. She feels that vintage hairstyles are a lost art and wishes to share it in a fun and practical way to the modern femme fatale! It is advisable to bring a camera and be prepared to take notes.


Pin Up Workshop with Corky Bordeaux of Bootstraps and Hanna Combs

Modern pin up dolls, Ms. Corky Bordeaux and Seanna Miriah (Ms. Pin Up Vixen 2008 & one of Ink & Iron’s top 12 pin ups in the nation!) from Bootstraps Burlesque have joined to bring you a ménage of secrets, tips, and styling for anyone interested in being a pin up girl for a day or for life. From concept design to choosing costuming, hair, makeup, and photographers, Corky and Seanna will give you the tools to get the most out of your photo shoots. You will learn how to orchestrate a classic pin up image that will captivate your viewer. They will focus on classic pin up poses, expressions, how to use the lighting to highlight your bodacious assets, and tips for classic 1940/50’s styling. Joining Corky and Seanna will be Asheville’s star photographer, Ms. Hannah Combs. Hannah has been frequently published and is a highly regarded and in demand local pin up photographer. The session will end with a fabulous photo shoot with direction from the team, and you will be able to take home a saucy pin up photo to help you remember what you learned. Please bring a costume and any props you may want to shoot with. The team highly recommends having hair and make-up before you arrive for more time in front of the camera. This workshop will benefit dames of all experience levels, whether you are a hard core pin up forever or just learning the sailor ropes ;) Class size is limited so reserve your spot early.


Hoops with MelMacPink

Hoopdancing for Fun and Fitness! Learn the basics of hoopdancing with the director of Asheville Hoops. This workshop will help you expand your hoopdancing skills from simple waist hooping into utilizing everything you've got, from hands, arms, neck, shoulders, and beyond! Custom-made, weighted fitness hoops will be provided by Asheville Hoops or bring your own if you wish. Hoops will be availbale for sale after class.


Intro to Aerials with Guerrilla Divas

Beginning/Intermediate Aerial Arts: Let Darcy gently introduce you to the air or show you some fun stuff to add to your beginning aerial repertoire. Be aware, this class is not for the advanced student (unless you want to do L-sits and reverse pull-ups for 1.5 hrs!)


Feather Boa Technique with Lady Di

Study classic moves concealing, framing and accentuating the body with the boa. Enjoy an education on the variety of quality boas. Expand your drills and skills to thrill! Bring afeather boa, (some available to borrow) heels, shorts or dancepants.


Business of Burlesque with Katherine Lashe of the Syrens of the South

Business of Burlesque with Katherine Lashe of the Syrens of the South Katherine Lashe has put together a class for people who want to take their performance careers to the next level. Hear her expound upon how to get your name out there and recognized on a larger scale, go over how to get the seats occupied at your shows, and how to negotiate bookings. Learn these skills, essential for both the hobbyist and the serious artist. Please be prepared to take notes.


Women's Make-up & Hair for Stage with DeLacey Heartbreaker Santini

Make yout features glow and simmer on the big stage! Learn make-up theory and observe the process. Bring your makeup boxes and a notebook as we explore products and what they can do for you!


Boylesque with Smokin' McQueen

Boylesque, the male version of the neo-Burlesque movement, is a fun and exciting addition to any variety/striptease show. The Tease isn't just a game for the girls anymore, but also a sensational and provocative means of exploring mens sexuality, comedy, and performance. With bump and grind lecturing and instruction from Smokin' McQueen, international boylesque performer featured on TV's 'America's Got Talent', this tutorial will be a rousing and hopefully eye-popping education into the world of Boylesque. Prepare to make notes and to bring a tie.


Fire Performance & Safety with Unifire

Unifire Theater presents an intensive workshop on the fire arts. Workshop includes a brief history of the fire arts, fire performance and safety, a question and answer period, as well as on hands movement and instruction in the art of staff and poi.


PRIVATES with Trixie and Monkey

Ready for the next level? If you like Trixie and Monkey's award-winning performances, you'll love having their undivided attention on YOU. In a one hour private session, you will perform your act in costume once, then receive dozens of ideas and suggestions on making bigger choices, taking risks, increasing your stage presence and making the audience love you. All of which will be immediately applied to your act. This is the best money you will ever invest in your art!

Over the past 8 years, Trixie and Monkey have not only created a repertoire of 30+ burlesque and circus acts, but they have performed with and watched the greatest performers in the business. Drawing on their years of combined experience, this dynamic duo promises to take your performances from pretty good to jaw-dropping. Videotaping is permitted. Open to anyone with an existing act, recommended for performers with 2+ years experience.
