Fosse-lized!
with Samantha Riggs of BoomBoomBollywood

Let us tip our stylish bowler hats to Bob Fosse, jazz dance choreographer extraordinaire! Samantha has brought the stylized, cynical sexuality of Fosse to Bellydance and Fosse-lized some tribal fusion combos for you to learn. These combos are dark, satirical and full of attitude and emotive body language. Besides his distinctive dance style (which included the use of inward knees, rounded shoulders and body isolations), Fosse also utilized the idea of subtext (unspoken thoughts and motives – the content underneath the dialogue) and gave his dancers something to think about during their numbers. Samantha will facilitate the incorporation of subtext into dance to help develop better acting technique on stage, bringing an awareness of pushing an intent just beneath the surface to create more intensity. Long skirts will just get in your way, so please wear form-fitting pants or shorts. Fosse believed that “The time to sing is when your emotional level is too high to just speak anymore, and the time to dance is when your emotions are just too strong to only sing about how you feel.” Amen.

Pirate Bellydance: Why Is The Rum Always Gone?
with Samantha Riggs of BoomBoomBollywood

These skills can be applied to almost any hand-held prop (rum bottles, fire props, swords, etc.) and will also come in handy at Tribo parties. Please bring a plastic bottle to use as a prop in class and if you need knee, ankle or foot support for floor work and drops, please bring that too.

Beyond Hijaz: Enriching Tribal Belly Dance Culture with Exotic Modes for Improvisation
with Donnegan

For Beginner to Intermediate Musicians
We've all played it – they've all danced to it; Hollywood's infamous Arabic scale, Hijaz-Kar, pervades much of the western perception of Middle Eastern music. It is often the default mode and rhythm for most musicians and dancers whose knowledge of Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Balkan, and Greek music is either newly forming or unexplored.
The creative spirit of tribal belly dance culture encourages new and sensuous sounds. Instrumentalists are invited to a taste-sampling of rare and exotic modes from the Middle East and ancient Near East. Participants will receive a take-home sheet featuring the examples covered in class and are encouraged to inspire the dancers with them during the event.
Microtonal instrumentalists and drummers are encouraged to participate; equal tempered instrumentalists are more than welcome to join but may experience limitations from their instrument.
