Arts on the Lake!

Experience the Triboriginal Cultural Immersion. Performers, night owls, families, all together in a gorgeous mountain setting, with incredible whole foods cuisine and four days of arts programming, poised to inspire everyone from the serious bellydancer, to the tiny tot.

Dance, drum, study, and play with artists of renown. This year’s staff comes from all corners of the nation: California, Arizona, Maryland, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and more.

Triboriginal takes place at Camp Merri-Mac, a lovely campground on a lake just outside Asheville, NC, with sleeping cabins, a theater, authentic and awesome world cuisine, child care, hiking trails and more!

In addition to the extensive schedule of dance, music and cultural programming oriented to our adult community, we are committed to the artists of the future, with three days of children's programming and activities. Our Children’s Program Scholarship fund is slowly growing, and we look forward to being able to offer future assistance to our Tribo families!

Classes and performances aside, the camp is beautiful, with swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and just relaxing. If you have been to Triboriginal, you will know why this unique event is a favorite. If you haven’t been yet, we can’t wait to show you why this is a special place.

Updates for this year:
PLANS are afoot to move the gorgeous Tribal Bazaar to the green near the dining hall, to enhance the cozy community feeling and allow everyone easy access in all weather to all the fabulous goods in the Bazaar.
The Hookah Dome will remain on the green also for everyone’s continued enjoyment.

Also, new this year - THURSDAY DANCE MASTER CLASS!
These intimate sessions will give dancers quality time with the members of the Zafira Dance Company, and jumpstart the Triboriginal weekend with yoga, dance and a delicious dinner onsite!

“What is it all about?”
The mission of Triboriginal is to create a ‘Tribal culture weekend’ to satisfy every aspect of the international, continuously developing Tribal Bellydance culture, & our close community. Just now in its first year, we aspire to offer something for everyone: the bellydancers & musicians, burgeoning circus & sideshow types, mates & spouses, children & teens, morning people & late-nighters, meat-eaters & vegetarians, camping-types & city folks.

“Why so much?”
Well, unlike most weekend dance events, we have your food and lodging needs rolled into the cost. Once you arrive, you don’t need to spend anything on travel or lodging.

Compare with other events of this scope -
Attending weekend long events elsewhere, the biggest costs typically;

  • Hotel: average $50-100 per night – 2-3 nights = $150-300 per person or group.
  • Classes: a four-six hour day seems to average $80-100 per person.
  • Shows: add a $15 ticket for the workshop show that night per person.
  • Food & drink: a very frugal workshop attendee at a non-‘Tribo’ event spends $5 on breakfast, $5 on snacks, & $10 on both lunch and dinner, that’s $30 per day. Over two-three days, that’s STILL $60-90.
  • Gas: add in $10-20 for travel from lodgings, classes, shows & restaurants.

By these estimates, a two day workshop/learning vacation becomes a $450 cost minimum. Triboriginal is incredibly affordable & healthy for the environment and is a full three days! Other dance & music camps we reviewed came MUCH closer to this figure in cost.

This event also offers the unheard-of childcare option, allowing families to train & vacation together, as well as a variety of activities & classes appropriate for the non-dancing members of the community: music, fire arts & safety, circus & sideshow performing arts, stage presentation, crafting, gypsy arts, the Peace Vigil, business & technology track, & more.

Don’t forget the parties, the Bazaar, the Hookah Dome, the lake, the mountains, & more…

“OK, it’s affordable. But, what do my fees actually pay for?”
Event insurance and liability; Site fees for EVERY person at the event, volunteer, instructor or paying attendee; Child care staff; Lifeguards; Food supplies, staff, planning & prep; Instructor/Performer fees; Millions of hours of planning; Even more stuff we don’t want to bore you with.

The vision of Triboriginal: Tribal Dance, Music & Culture Camp in the long-term is to continuously evolve into the event that the national Tribal community NEEDS & WANTS:
a collective expression of our Culture. Please feel free to share ideas and people hours to help make it so!
